For the decorative, magical black-and-white effect, the light and dark of the woodcut, only carving knives and wood are available. The artist is a draughtsman and wood engraver at the same time. The woodcut is characterized by little line, but wood-carved surfaces, spots, stripes, lines, wedges that shine white from the black printing surface that remains. In the sixties and eighties, Theodor Gerkens devoted himself intensively to woodcuts, which he cut very vividly, almost painterly. His woodcut works are extensive.
